All objects I have observed have been
given a rating according to the "Harshaw Scale", which is as follows :
1 |
Outstanding view |
2 |
Very fine view, better than average |
3. |
Average |
4. |
Sub-average, disappointing |
5. |
Very disappointing, hardly worth the
effort |
The table below shows the Deepsky objects I rated 1 and
2
(sorted by constellation)
As the rating depends on the instrument used for observation, the scope for which this
rating is given is mentioned.
(Bino = 10x50 binoculars, AT80/GS80/ZS80 = 80mm f/6 refractors, MK67 = Intes 6" f/12 Maksutov, LX10 = Meade 8" f/10 SCT,
C11 = Celestron 11" f/10 SCT, C14 = Celestron 14" f/11 SCT)

"Andromeda

A view with the C11 on a good clear night
shows the two dark bands through this famous galaxy. Also the large OB-association
within the southern outer regions of the galaxy, NGC206, can be seen. Best view with
low power (97x).
Through the 80mm f/6 refractor it is a great sight to see M31 together with M32 and

Interesting planetary which shows an
outer shell around the very bright round bluish core, using averted vision. UHC makes
the bright core jump out while OIII dims the core somewhat and makes the outer shell
better visible. |

A string of 5 bright stars and some
fainter stars around (Best with low power, disappointing with C11) |

Large and loose, but the many bright
stars make it a wonderful area to surf through with low power (70x, 93x) |

"Cresent
nebula"
Small nebula which is only visible when using UHC. The brightest part looks like a
comettail attached to a nearby star. Using OIII shows more of the nebula, a large patch
of nebulosity appears, with brighter parts along the edge (the cresent) and fainter
nebulosity in the interior.

Large but faint cluster, subtle
because of the many faint stars that show up on the edge of visibility. |
