Near the edge of the Sun, about a quarter of an hour before exit. 

Composite image. Times were roughly: 08.00, 09.30 (main image), 10.30 and 12.15.

 

A very simple setup and method were used. Sun and Mercury were projected through my Swaroski AT80 on a piece of white board. The images were taken with a handheld digital camera (Medion 4.1 Mpix). Exposure and focusing were on automatic. The image below shows the setup in the garden of a fellow observer (Zuidlaren, 53°06' N, 06°41' E)
